Nouns & Other Words

Paintings of nouns my son, Oliver (2-yrs old), could identify.

I’ve always loved a painting with a whole lot of negative space. Rather than have objects be painted in the background of scenes or in a still life, Nouns & Other Words was my own exploration into the blunt style I’ve always loved, but never painted myself. Coming from a background in serigraphy, the paintings where created using a similar approach as the printing techniques. A stencil was cut in the shape of an apple, painted, and then peeled off. The prints became mono-prints since there image was predestined by the stencil’s form.

When editing the pieces for the show, I would ask my son, Oliver (who was 2-yrs old at the time), if he could tell what I painted. I would ask, “Hey, Ollie. What is this?” He would then reply, “a dirty hat?”. Success. That would be the title of the painting.
