A Phone Call ☎️

from $0.00

Over the years, I've been advocating against email being the default means of business communication. It is amazing for sending .pdfs, hyperlinks, and exchanging info or data that needs to be archived, but it makes conversation take too long.

I love the telephone because each person is expensing the same amount of time at the same time. The conversation shares a start time and, more importantly, the same end time. It ends when it ends.

Less j𝘶n𝘬 mail

Email is a never-ending digital ping-pong game that accounts for a huge percentage of employees' workday.

An email wants an email back. It creates its own debt, which often leaves people feeling overwhelmed. Which is why I include a message at the bottom of my emails, informing others that I will not be available to send emails every day, but I am always available to talk on the phone at 1 (800) 867-5319. It has been slowly rolled out over the past years, creating a different expectation for my time.

⚠️ DISCLAIMER: I'm trying to only email once a week to spend more of my time making Art.

If you need a quick answer feel free to call me anytime → 1 (800) 867-5319

I make myself overly available to stop and take every phone call by reallocating time I would have spent emailing (with the constant temptation to be distracted by a spreadsheet, another email, excess data, or the urge to buy another synthesizer). The key is that the time isn't 1:1. Often, the first phone call is shorter than the first email would have been, which also prevents downstream email clogging with new questions that someone could have answered immediately. If you forgot something, or have a question tomorrow—call 'em back!

"Hi Eileen, do you have forty-four in stock?...No? Ok, can we split ship the first twenty-two this Friday?...Perfect! I'll tell Thom to send the check out today."

I can quickly answer questions on the phone (and continue working on a different project with my hands!). It takes me much longer to focus and type out an answer that hopefully does not need another reply. Gimme one quick call vs. 3–5 emails spread out over the week.

I will not read and send emails every day until I die. Instead, I have decided to have a few five-minute phone calls from time to time, and get to meet and talk to interesting people almost every day on the phone.

"Strange how a phone call can change your day. Take you away. Away from the feeling of being alone. Bless the telephone."
