Discourse Recorder

from $0.02

By appropriating a chess timer, we can accurately measure discourse.

Each person hits the button closest to them each time they begin talking.
The person who talked the most is declared the “loser.” Conversely, the “winner” didn’t participate as much in the conversation.

The goal is to produce a tie.

How To Use

Person 1 starts the clock by pressing the toggle closest to them. When Person 2 interrupts or begins to talk, they must first punch in using the toggle closet to them. At the end of the conversation, the person with the most time logged is declared the Loser. The goal is to result in a tie. By ending with matched times, each person has listened and talked equally. When we pursue a tie or close match, we have to adjust to each other, creating discourse vs. lectures.

User Produced

A User Produced product is made, created, sourced, built, or assembled by the end-user. The user is the top priority.

The most significant difference between D.I.Y. and User Produced is that a User Produced product is designed by a professional for the non-professional. Think of it as an architect drawing construction plans. The product's value is designed-instruction. The product can be a sequence of construction steps (think of LEGO® instructions) or merely informing the user of new use, material, or resource (think of hyperlinks in a website).

With a User Produced product, if no one takes an interest in the product, it is not made. If 143 people take an interest, then 143 are made. The product is only brought to life in quantities of its interest, preventing the over-production of flops.

A User Produced product takes into account any objects and materials the end-user can source themselves. Instead of leveraging connections to materials and processes, this production method encourages the free distribution of resources and Producing only the items the user cannot source themselves.

The critical difference in User Produced products is that profit is taking a backseat. This is not to say that profit is void, but it is not what makes the product successful. A User Produced product is successful based on the scale of its interest. The profit is merely a result. Something else happens when profit is not the focus; the user can become the priority. When a user is the priority of a product, the design improves. When the user is not a priority, we are at risk of designing junk.
